metal abundance

The proportion of elements heavier than helium in the composition of a star. In astronomical terminology, the expression "metal" is used to encompass all the elements heavier than helium. Though many are not metals in the usual chemical sense of the word, the term probably arose because lines of metals such as iron and nickel tend to dominate stellar spectra.
